| Body Bonz Monofilament Retainers: | |
Body Bonz were created because people in all walks of life are enjoying their piercings in record numbers. Many piercees also have social or professional commitments however that prevent them from wearing their jewelry from time to time. It's difficult to hide many facial piercings such as the nostril or eyebrow. The old style lucite or acrylic retainers are still too large for some people and the o-rings are frequently lost. Some piercers recommend painting the end of a flat disc nostril screw with nail polish, making the retainer look like a pimple. Body Bonz were created as a solution for those seeking a better facial piercing retainer.
General Information: Body Bonz is a new type of piercing retainer that doesn't use o-rings. Body Bonz are soft, flexible and completely clear, making them one of the most effective retainers on the market. They are made of Monofilament Polymide. This is the same material that non-absorbable suture material is made from. This material has an FDA rating as being non-allegenic (FDA listing A100586). This material cannot be autoclaved for cleaning prior to use. Chemical disinfectants may be used. Due to their mechanical structure, Body Bonz are recommended for healed piercings only.
All sizes are approximate. Body Bonz are not machined, so therefore expect some variance in sizes and lengths. Most studios like varied lengths within a certain range as most actual piercing lengths are rarely an exact length.
Insertion: We recommend the use of water based lubricant such as KY for insertion. Some piercers may choose a retainer one gauge thinner than the actual piercing in order to comfortably accomodate the larger end piece.
Types of Bonz and Common Uses:
 Nose Bonz - 20g with 18g end pieces are used for both 20g and 18g nostril piercings for those who prefer a "Bone" style nostril jewelry or retainer.
 Nostril Screw - Available in 20g or 18g to retain nostril piercings. They are shaped as traditional nostril screws for clients or piercers who prefer that style of jewelry.
 Fish Bonz - Fish Bonz were designed as a clear fishtail retainer for labret or "Marilyn" piercings. 16g to 14g, they are available in three lengths, short (1/4-5/16), medium (5/16-3/8), and long (3/8-7/16). The tail will conform to the inside of each individual's mouth for comfortable wear and can be trimmed to length with sharp scissors. Some are finding that they like to trim them for other piercings. An example are inner cartilage piercings such as the tragus.
 Body Bonz - Body Bonz are available in 18g to 14g thickness and 5/16" to 7/16" lengths. They can be used in any piercing (except the tongue) where a straight retainer is desired. The gauge refers to the thickness of the barbell with the ends being approximately one size larger. For comfort, piercers may want to choose a retainer one size smaller than the actual piercing when using these.
 Pins - Pins are available 18g to 14g. They only have one end piece that's larger and they can be trimmed to the desired length. They work well for those who wear retainers for a short period of time or insert and remove them often. As there is no o-ring, we do not recommend sleeping or showering while wearing this type of retainer.
 Bent Bonz - Bent Bonz come in 16g and 14g thicknesses and 5/16"-7/16" in length. These retainers work well in eyebrow piercings, lips where rings are worn, most cartilage piercings and some navel piercings (depending on anatomy). The sizing is a bit different on these retainers. The barbell is slightly smaller than the indicated gauge while the ends are a bit larger than the indicated gauge. A 16g bent bonz will have a 17g barbell with 15g ends. This works to retain a 16g piercing while allowing a more comfortable insertion. |
